The "Vestals" were six virgins who attended the sacred fire bought back by Aeneas from Troy, housed within a sactuary in the Roman Forum.  These maidens, chosen from girls ages 6 to 10, served for 30 years, after which they were free to marry.  A vestal who compromised her purity was punished by being buried alive.
