Sports Radar's speed guns utilize a low power microwave transceiver that senses the speed of an object using the Doppler principal. The transmitter portion of the transceiver sends out a constant X-band signal. The receiver portion of the transceiver receives this signal as it bounces off of objects in front of the antenna. If the object is moving, the received frequency will be slightly different than the original (this is the Doppler effect). The radar gun senses the difference in the transmitted and received signal. The frequency of this difference signal is proportional to the speed of the object, which the radar gun converts this to Miles per Hour, or Kilometers per Hour.
