Hortus Second : A Concise Dictionary of Gardening, General Horticulture and Cultivated Plants in North America compiled by L H Bailey & Ethel Bailey. New York, The Macmillan Co. 1966. Revised new edition. 14th printing. DJ. A new work, from the original edition published in 1930, but including most of the material in the former work. Plants in cultivation to the close of 1939 and the beginning of 1940 are included in this edition. Green cloth with gold lettering. Designed to account for all species and botanical varieties of plants in cultivation in the continental United States and Canada in the decade ending midyear 1940, together with brief directions on uses, propagation and cultivation. The inventory is based on the catalogues of seeds, bulbs, roots, shrubs, trees and other nursery stock in the published lists of commercial dealers, on statements in current journals, exchanges between growers, continuing correspondence, contents of herbaria and extensive experience with gardens. It is a source-book and record of the plant materials currently available in North American horticulture, with the addition of common names, descriptive terms and definitions, inventories of families of plants, and abundant cross-references. 778 pgs. Book is good except for an old owners name marked out with magic marker. DJ has some light soil and some edge chips.
