🎨 ABOUT GUSTAVE DORÉ 🎨
Few illustrators made darkness and light as expressive as Gustave Doré. His engravings often feel like glimpses into strange, enormous worlds where mountains, ruins, angels and human beings emerge dramatically from shadow. Doré illustrated everything from sacred scripture to fantasy, satire and literary classics, yet his unmistakable atmosphere connects them all. More than an illustrator, he was a master of visual storytelling.

🖼️ ABOUT THE ARTWORK 🖼️
Mary and the newborn Jesus glow at the heart of a humble shelter as shepherds crowd around in reverent wonder. The illustration depicts their visit in Luke 2, after an angel has announced the birth. Doré gathers rough clothing, crooks and quiet animals around the bright central group, making the stable’s ordinary textures part of the scene’s tenderness. Beyond the timber roof, small stars punctuate the darkness, while the visitors’ faces lead the eye towards the child.
