🎨 ABOUT GUSTAVE DORÉ 🎨
Few illustrators made darkness and light as expressive as Gustave Doré. His engravings often feel like glimpses into strange, enormous worlds where mountains, ruins, angels and human beings emerge dramatically from shadow. Doré illustrated everything from sacred scripture to fantasy, satire and literary classics, yet his unmistakable atmosphere connects them all. More than an illustrator, he was a master of visual storytelling.
🖼️ ABOUT THE ARTWORK 🖼️
Centaurs gather beside a red river as Dante and Virgil appear on the ridge above. In Canto XII of the Inferno, Nessus challenges the approaching travellers while the armed guardians patrol the blood in which violent souls are punished. Doré places powerful human torsos above restless horse bodies, giving the group a tense, watchful energy. Hands and faces break the river’s surface beneath them. The coloured water makes the landscape’s horror unmistakable, while the tiny poets on the distant height seem momentarily beyond reach of the bows below.
