An absolute rarity – have you ever seen one?

THE GLASTONBURY BUS!

1971 Hanomag Henchel (Mercedes 206) camper van project.

LHD.

1622cc petrol engine with 4 sp manual gearbox (standard for this model).

Last MOT expired 2021 and MOT’d for 15 years previously, even though it didn’t need one).

Hanomag-Henschel was a major German manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks,

and  vans, formed in 1969 through the merger of two existing historic industrial

companies:Hanomag and Henschel-Werke. They were then subsequently taken over by

Mercedes and so the legendary Mercedes 206 was born from this.

This particular vehicle was owned by a Dutch fella who resided in the UK (it’s been here

since 2007) and was in regular use all over Europe until relatively recently. It was always

MOT’d every year (last MOT being March 2021).

It has a BMC 1622 petrol engine as standard (as fitted to many Austin Morris variants of

the 1960’s) coupled to a 4 speed gearbox. It starts, runs and stops and I even took it to a few

shows this year.

It is basic to say the least, it has a bed and a cupboard unit with a sink and hob (neither

connected or working btw).

Carb could do with a rebuild as it has a flat spot, but that doesn’t stop it from being driven

(as I say, I took it to a few local shows without any issues). However, I would highly

recommend having it transported as it would be a brave man to drive it a long distance due

to a recent long period of inactivity. The seat belts are from a Peugeot and will possibly need

replacing due to their 'Heath Robinson' fitment.

The chassis and underneath is very good, but the body work is poor and this is the main

reason it is being sold as a project. The bodywork has been patched up and hand painted

more than once over the years and it held together with gaffer tape, layers of paint, bits of

bodge and a lot of  hope. It could easily be run ‘as-is’ as a patina bus (I have) and tbh, it

gives it loads of character, but maybe it now deserves a restoration, up to you?

Having said that, it is dry inside, drives reasonably well for an old 60/70’s classic vehicle,

and is rarer that rocking horse poo! I spent all day at recent shows talking to interested

people who had no idea what it was, so be prepared for lots of attention should you buy!

Please take a very good look at the pictures as it is definitely being sold as a running

restoration project and they form a huge part of the description. Also, please feel free to ask

any questions and I will of course answer to the best of my ability. Better still, come and

have a look if you’re anywhere near the North East of England (postcode DH4 4TU).

Please note that due to previous time-wasters, a £300 deposit will be required on agreement

of a sale and for safety and reliability, the van should be transported away on a truck or

trailer.

PS Woody and Buzz as shown in a couple of photos are NOT INCLUDED in the sale!
