Besonderheit & Bemerkung

Specificities and notes

You are bidding here on an original sculpture by the artist Karl Rödel.

This large-scale work, probably created in the 1960s, once again demonstrates the artist’s great delight in experimenting with materials and motifs. The artist, whose work has always been rooted in craftsmanship, displays his skill in working with metal here.

Here, Rödel works in an almost graphic manner, utilising the elements of line and plane. It is hardly surprising that the motif of the guitar also appears in a series of etchings by the artist.

Rödel welds the shape of a Spanish guitar onto a base of brass sheet. Around the instrument, further bundles of lines are joined to form geometric grids. The thin wires are spot-welded to the sheet metal beneath.

The varied, vibrant patina of the metal lends the relief a particularly lively quality. The shadows cast by the suspended metal lines double the composition when the light falls at a certain angle.

The Artist Karl Rödel

Upon his death in 1982, Karl Rödel left behind an extensive and multifaceted body of graphic and painted work. In his paintings and graphic prints, he consistently viewed the fusion of artisanal craftsmanship with artistic intent as a major creative challenge.

Whether in his watercolours or his commissioned monumental artworks, Rödel’s thematic content and formal execution were always sensitively attuned to the specific context and parameters of the project. Rödel developed this approach from the Bauhaus philosophy of Walter Gropius—a philosophy grounded in the principle that a work of art should be realized through, and grounded in, technical skill and craftsmanship.

Here is your opportunity to acquire a unique, large-format original work by this renowned German post-war painter, offered directly from his estate—do not miss this chance!

We guarantee swift and reliable processing!

Karl Rödel was born in 1907 in Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt am Main and died in 1982 in Mannheim.

Karl Rödel's work is multifaceted and inspired by many 20th-century art movements. The artist drew inspiration from international artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall. Loving dialogue, he sought to connect the world's diversity in his artistic work. His work is highly diverse, not only in terms of his diverse talents as a painter, graphic artist, sgraffito painter, and as a creator of monumental mosaics, stained-glass windows, frescoes, and tapestries. Even within these genres, his repertoire is highly diverse. This diversity is due not least to his consistent approach to artistic research and the resulting gradual development of his visual language.

After a dramatic fire in which his mother lost her life, the young Rödel, at the age of ten, moved with his father and five brothers to the village of Wörmlitz near Halle an der Saale. Following in the footsteps of his father, a carpenter and artisan, he began an apprenticeship in Halle in 1922. This was also his first contact with the School of Applied Arts at Burg Giebichenstein. In 1929, he received a place at this school and subsequently studied under artists such as Charles Crodel, Gerhard Marcks, and Herbert Post. From 1933 to 1934, he attended the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts and was subsequently hired by the provincial conservator, Prof. H. Giesau, as a freelance assistant in his workshop. There he received training as a restorer. This was followed by trips to Italy (1934) and England (1937). From 1939, he worked as a restorer at the Schloss Museum in Berlin.

In 1942, Rödel moved to Berlin-Steglitz and set up a studio apartment there. He subsequently served in World War II until 1945 and was taken prisoner of war. During his absence, his Berlin studio, along with all his works and a small art collection, was destroyed in 1944.

After returning home in 1945, Rödel initially worked in the workshop of the state conservator. From 1947, he headed the lithography class at the Burg Giebichenstein Art School for five years. In 1953, he moved to Mannheim, where he founded the Mannheim Art School a year later with municipal support. Further trips followed, including to Paris (1956) and the Netherlands (1957), as well as to Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Africa in 1960. Upon his return, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute for Art Education in Saarbrücken in 1961.

Condition report (see photos)

The sculpture is in satisfying condition. In places, some of the metal wires appear to be missing. A few welds have broken and some parts have come loose. Slight surface soiling. (One strip of the frame is missing).

The images are photographed as detailed as possible. Some details are enlarged. The condition of the item is best seen in the pictures. Due to different color settings of screens slight color variations are possible.

The condition was assessed to the best of our knowledge and belief. This reflects our subjective assessment. In any case, we recommend that you personally inspect the artwork in our head quarters.
