๐จ ABOUT CARAVAGGIO ๐จ
Few painters made light and darkness feel as immediate as Caravaggio. His paintings place saints, sinners and ordinary people in stark, theatrical light, giving sacred and mythological scenes an almost physical presence. Rather than idealising his figures, he painted them with dirt, tension, age and emotion intact, creating a realism that was startling in his own time. His radical use of chiaroscuro and uncompromising naturalism helped reshape Baroque painting and influenced generations of artists across Europe.
๐ผ๏ธ ABOUT THE ARTWORK ๐ผ๏ธ
Christ stands bound to a column as his tormentors prepare to strike. Caravaggio gives the figures weight and proximity: bare limbs and tense hands emerge from a dark, enclosed space. Light falls across Christโs body, setting his stillness against the force gathering around him. The Gospel episode is presented without a grand setting or distant crowd, making the cruelty immediate and difficult to escape. A few gestures and the pressure of bodies carry the entire drama.
