Description

Topographical postcard showing the band playing at the pierhead of Southend Pier, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. The photographic image reproduced in print gives a close view of the ornate covered bandstand with the Southend Pierhead Lighthouse prominently positioned immediately alongside.

The lighthouse is the cast-iron lighthouse at the seaward end of Southend Pier. Its open lattice tower, gallery and lantern are clearly recognisable in this view. The lighthouse remains an important feature of the pierhead and makes this a useful view for both Southend Pier and lighthouse collectors.

The bandstand occupies much of the foreground, with numerous visitors gathered around it while the band is playing. The combination of the lighthouse, bandstand and people provides a detailed social-history view of activity at the pierhead.

The front is captioned:

“THE BAND PLAYING AT PIERHEAD, SOUTHEND-ON-SEA.”

The divided reverse is printed in green with “POST CARD”, “CORRESPONDENCE” and “ADDRESS”. It bears the publisher's wording “E. T. W. Dennis & Sons Ltd., London & Scarboro'” and “British Manufacture Throughout.”

The postcard is unused and unwritten. The image appears most consistent with the inter-war period, probably the 1920s.
