Marlboro Plate Birks 1930s Cedar Lined Cigarette Box 5" x 4" McGill University Crest.
Most of these boxes were produced in Montreal by Birks between 1920 and 1950.
Most were produced between 1920 and 1950s by Montreal high-end Canadian jewelers like Birks or American companies like Poole Silver Co.
The cigarette box has a heavy silver plate over a copper base, a cedar wood lining to keep tobacco fresh, and the McGill University coat of arms engraved on the lid. Silver-plated cigarette boxes featuring the McGill crest were primarily produced and gifted between the 1920s and 1950s.
These items peaked in popularity during the interwar period (1918–1939) when smoking accessories were common high-end gifts for graduates and military officers. Many were often presented to faculty, donors, or members of campus organizations like the Canadian Officers' Training Corps (COTC). Nice peice.
There is a heavy patina, scratches, and age to it.
The cedar lining is in nice shape and still smells.
Dated to the 1930s and in good overall condition.
Nice peice of history.
