An exceptionally attractive and scarce hand-painted enamel box by Elliot Hall Enamels of Worcestershire, England.

Entitled “Butterfly,” this beautiful example is richly decorated with butterflies resting among vivid orange and yellow nasturtium flowers against a turquoise-green ground.

The decoration is not confined to the exterior: opening the hinged box reveals further butterflies, flowers and foliage, all meticulously painted by hand. The polished gilt-metal mount provides a particularly elegant finishing touch.

Every Elliot Hall enamel was painted freehand rather than using a printed transfer, meaning that each example has its own individual variations. The enamelling and painting involved numerous separate firings before the gilt-metal mount was fitted and the finished piece inspected.

With only 35 examples produced, this is a very scarce design. Complete examples retaining the signed certificate, cushion and both original boxes are particularly difficult to find.

A highly decorative miniature work of British art and an excellent addition to an established Elliot Hall or fine-enamel collection.
