Here is an antique apothecary bottle of Dr. J. Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters. It is about 8.5 inches tall, empty and made of black or very dark amber glass (when held up to light). The are labels on 2 opposing sides and then one side has raised lettering, "DR. J. HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS" and the other side "18 FLUID OZ." These bottles contained a "medicinal tonic" that was popular from the 1850s through the early 20th century. Original Purpose: Marketed as a cure for ailments such as impure bile and lack of appetite, now considered quack medicine. Ingredients: The formula was famously potent due to a high alcohol content, reportedly around 47 percent. Civil War Usage: Union troops referred to it as "The Soldier's Safeguard". Age: These bottles typically date from the 1850s to the 1890s, with earlier versions often being hand-blown. Good antique condition except the labels. The front label has lots of wear and the back label is totally unreadable. There is 1 glass chip at the top edge best seen in the last photo. The cork is stuck in place.
