This Japanese art Maneki Neko lucky cat is a one-of-a-kind hand-painted ceramic figurine by artist Ayaka Nakagawa, painted in water-based ceramic acrylics on a Seto beckoning cat made in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
In Japan the Maneki Neko has long been cherished as a symbol of good fortune. Since 2021 we have planned and run a project called "Place where you meet cats" together with artists, in support of rescue cats. This beckoning cat was created by an artist who supports the project, with the wish that it will beckon more connections between rescue cats and their future owners. A portion of the proceeds is donated to organisations that run adoption events for rescue cats.
The base is a Seto Maneki Neko from Chugai Toen, a long-established kiln in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, a pottery town with a thousand years of history. Each piece is individually hand-painted over the ceramic body, so no two are alike, and each comes with a certificate of authenticity.
A traditional Japanese cat figurine with a front paw raised in a gesture that beckons people and good fortune. It is said to have arisen from the merchant culture of Edo-period Japan, and today it is a beloved good-luck charm for business prosperity, attracting customers and improving financial luck, placed at shop entrances and in ordinary homes alike. The blessing differs with the raised paw: the right paw is said to beckon money, the left paw to beckon people and customers.
Graduated from Tama Art University, Department of Design, majoring in Textile and Dyeing Design. She works in an original technique, painting in acrylics on canvas instead of paper and drawing with freehand machine embroidery instead of a pen. Her work appears across advertising, commercials, film and magazines, and she exhibits her art pieces regularly.
Founded in 1952 in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. The company produces zodiac figurines, beckoning cats, auspicious ornaments and seasonal decorations. Under the philosophy of making ceramics that reach the heart, it continues its craft in Seto, a pottery town with a thousand years of history and tradition, while keeping a sensibility attuned to the times.
