Up for auction is a magnificent, highly collectible piece of frontier history: an authentic (and very rare) Antique Victorian Klondike Gold Rush 18K Gold Nugget & Quartz Matrix Crescent Moon Brooch by W.H. Mendham (Carson City). This piece was recently uncovered in a jewelry box from an estate sale attic and remains in beautiful, untouched antique condition.
Historical Significance & Maker Mark: The reverse of the brooch features a crisp, beautifully preserved hallmark: "MADE IN CARSON / MENDHAM / 18K". This attributes the piece directly to W.H. Mendham, a prominent pioneer jeweler celebrated for his custom designs during the late 19th-century gold booms.
Design & Composition: - Frame: Solid 18-karat yellow gold crescent moon base plate.
- Nuggets: Encrusted with genuine, raw placer-gold nuggets. Natural gold nuggets of this era typically test at a very high purity level (approximately 22K–23K), giving them a rich, buttery-yellow color.
- Matrix Specimen: The lower curve features premium, natural Gold-in-Quartz matrix chunks (visible white/translucent native host rock), highly prized by Gold Rush jewelry collectors.
- Symbolism: The crescent moon was a premier Victorian motif representing new beginnings and rebirth—highly fitting for the dreamers who traveled north.
Condition Report:
- Weight: 7.3 grams total weight.
- Measurements: Measures approximately 1" to 1-1/8" across the span.
- Details: Classic period-accurate extended pin stem resting in a C-clasp mechanism (potentially repaired at some point).
- Preservation: This brooch features a beautiful, undisturbed natural antique patina on the reverse. It has not been chemically cleaned, polished, or altered, preserving its historical integrity and full collector value.
