SUPERMAN #191 — DC COMICS — NOVEMBER 1966

An exceptionally sharp Silver Age copy of Superman #191, featuring “The Prisoner of DEMON!” and the first appearance of DEMON — Destruction, Extortion, Murder, Overthrow of Nations. This wonderfully offbeat Silver Age adversary organization was created by Jim Shooter and Al Plastino, while the striking cover features classic Curt Swan pencils with George Klein inks.

This is a remarkably well-preserved raw copy for a 1966 comic. The front cover retains deep, glossy blacks, vivid color and strong overall reflectivity, with extremely attractive eye appeal. Corners and edges remain notably sharp, the spine presents cleanly with only minor evidence of handling, and the cover lies flat without any obvious major creasing or distortion. The back cover is similarly clean and bright. Interior pages are supple and attractive, staples appear secure, and the book presents exceptionally well throughout.

The photographs include low-angle views specifically intended to show the surface, spine and flatness of the comic as clearly as possible. At this grade level, very small defects can make the difference between neighboring grades, so please examine all photographs carefully. Based upon its overall preservation, presentation and visible defects, I estimate this copy at 9.2 NM-.

Beyond its unusually high-grade presentation, #191 is a terrific snapshot of mid-1960s Superman: a bizarre mystical power jewel, a secret criminal organization whose very name is an acronym for global villainy, and Superman quite literally chained into becoming the “Prisoner of DEMON.” It is a visually memorable Curt Swan cover and an appealing Silver Age curiosity that becomes considerably harder to dismiss when encountered in condition this strong.
