A wonderfully charming vintage sailor’s valentine, beautifully composed by hand with an extraordinary variety of tiny natural shells arranged into a symmetrical heart, floral details, and radiating geometric patterns.
There is so much to look at here—the soft aqua shells, delicate pink and white heart, striped shells, tiny rosettes, and sculptural yellow shell flowers all work together beautifully. It has that wonderful quality of folk art where the closer you look, the more craftsmanship you notice. The entire composition feels joyful, meticulous, and genuinely special.
The shellwork is housed beneath glass in a handsome dark mahogany-toned octagonal case measuring approximately 10” flat-to-flat. The case has a lovely rich vintage finish and presents beautifully, with only modest signs of age. There is a small dent/nick at the lower left edge of the wood frame, visible in the photographs.
And then there is our one adventurous little shell. One small accent shell has come loose beneath the glass and occasionally likes to relocate itself around the perimeter. 😄 It is not an important part of the central design and does not detract from the overall appearance, but our tiny traveling companion is fully disclosed and shown in the photos.
Overall, this is a beautiful vintage example with tremendous coastal, nautical, and folk-art appeal. It would be wonderful displayed in a beach house, coastal interior, gallery wall, or anywhere a little intricate handmade beauty is appreciated.
Condition: Very good vintage condition overall. Shell composition is remarkably well preserved. Minor age-related wear to the mahogany-toned case, including the small lower-left dent mentioned above. One loose non-essential accent shell beneath the glass. Please review all photographs closely, as they are part of the condition description.
