Up for sale is a rare, historically significant antique 1926 original photograph documenting a monumental milestone tradition at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
The image captures an immense crowd of students gathered for a formal campus celebration (specifically identified as the 1926 Tree Day or May Day pageant ceremony). The stunning, light-block stone backdrop features the grand Gothic arched entrance and towering triple-paned lancet windows of Diana Chapman Walsh Alumnae Hall.
Historical Significance & Rarity:
Alumnae Hall was a massive undertaking for the college. Conceived by the student body in 1908, its construction was heavily delayed by the Great Fire of 1914 and World War I. The cornerstone was finally laid in 1922, and the building was completed in late 1923.
Dating to 1926, this photograph captures one of the very first large-scale outdoor campus events ever held at the newly opened hall. The early-1920s bobbed hairstyles and cloche hats visible in the crowd provide fantastic era-specific details. This is a phenomenal primary visual document of Wellesley's early history, academic traditions, and architectural heritage.
