History

Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria became one of Germany’s best-known medieval preservation towns and was a popular subject for 20th-century prints and tourist artwork. Its surviving gates, towers, half-timbered houses, and narrow streets made it especially popular with artists working in etching and hand-colored print formats.

German artist Ernst Geissendörfer (1908–1993) produced numerous hand-colored etchings of Rothenburg between roughly the mid-20th century and later decades, including views of the Rödertor, Markusturm, and other medieval gates. His authenticated works are normally signed or titled in the exposed lower margin, which is not visible on this framed example.
