THE TOTAL 2002
ONE YEAR OF FRENCH PRODUCTION
|
|
"This work contains the list of French films (or majority French co-productions) released this year.
A collection limited exclusively to feature-length fiction films - excluding animated films -, La Totale aims to provide a global vision of French cinema in 2002. For all films, a summary drawn up from the Monsieur Cinéma Sheets and review excerpts is included. Week after week, the works of established filmmakers and the first works, small and big budget films, come together in this first edition of La Totale emphasizing certain trends, directions that our cinematography seems to be taking such as the growing number of films directed by actors and the development of a two-speed cinema: the cinema of the poor (those that some think are the least educated), that of the greatest number (big budget films), that which is the most distributed and, in contrast, the cinema of the others, the one that you can see if you live in Paris (in the provinces, this cinema rarely benefits from a release), which you have to see from the week of release (afterwards, it has a good chance of being withdrawn from the poster) and which you have to look for most often in Art and Essay theaters at certain times and on certain very specific days.
This cinema that is often described as “difficult” is, as we can see, also difficult to access. This phenomenon, further accentuated by the explosion of unlimited cards, continues to remind us of the figures periodically published by the CNC. We must hope that French cinema in its plurality resists the conditioning imposed by the general economic context and that 2003 does not see the number of its films decrease.
To be continued next year. “Sandra Marti.
