White Reindeer is a tale for young readers about the nomadic Sami (or Lapp) people of Lapland in northern Scandinavia. The author, Miss Neill James, wrote from first-hand knowledge, having spent a year living among the Lapps. She tells the story of Pirak, a young boy. When he was almost ten years old his father brought home a white reindeer fawn, which Pirak named Urpu and who became his pet. The story tells of the many adventures of Pirak and Urpu, and how the white reindeer finally saved the Lapp village from starvation.
