This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 7 x 4¾ inches (175x120mm).

It shows a silver gelatin photograph of the mangled wreckage of a German aeroplane engine resting on a wooden railway flatcar. The side of the wooden wagon is painted with the word "Stuttgart" and the number "50 420", alongside a triangle symbol containing a "T" and a semi-circle containing "15". The engine consists of twisted metal framing and exposed radial cylinders.

The reverse has a typed caption on a paper slip titled "Wreckage of German Airplane Engine". It explains that the engine was shattered by Allied bombs and found by Allied and Italian engineers restoring rail lines at Caserta, Western Italy, for the Allied Fifth Army front. Additional text reads "Serviced by New York to List A. 22521-PNT", "War Pool Photo, Not For Use In British Isles Or Western Hemisphere", and "Approved By Appropriate U.S. Authority". A faint red stamp reading "IMPORTANT" is partially visible above the slip.
