This is a rare ceramic figural ink well. It features an older woman wearing a white ruffled bonnet with an exaggerated expression and an open mouth. Historically associated with satirical or insulting desk novelty items, she is often referred to as the ugly woman. Origin is most likely Staffordshire, although early pieces were not marked. French or German origin cannot be ruled out. Size 6.5 cm high and 6 cm wide. It is hand painted and in a very good condition for age, one small chip on base. Please see all photos.
