The Yashica 8PE-RS is a vintage 8mm tabletop film editor and viewer manufactured in Japan during the 1970s and 1980s. It was specifically engineered for home filmmakers and indie directors to manually preview, cut, and splice together analog movie footage before the advent of digital video editing.

 

 

Key Design and Physical Features

 

·         Fold-Away Design: To minimize storage space, the unit features a compact body with dual mechanical fold-out arms and winding cranks. When packed away, the arms fold tightly against the unit.

·         Built-In Viewing Screen: The front panel houses a small, clear ground-glass projection screen designed to view moving images in real-time as the film is manually advanced.

·         Manual Operation: The unit is completely non-motorized. Film movement relies entirely on the operator turning the hand-cranks on the supply (left) and take-up (right) reels. Metal Regular 8mm transport mechanism (marked with blue R) is easily removed and replaced with metal Super 8mm transport mechanism (marked with red S). Transports are stored under the name plate (secured with thumbscrews).

·         Tactile Controls: It includes direct analog adjustment knobs on the main housing for manual Focus and Framing (vertical alignment).

·         Frame Puncher: It features a mechanical frame-marker switch. Pushing this switch punctures a tiny physical hole into the exact film frame currently displayed on the screen, marking it as a precise edit or cut point.

·         Viewing bulbs are easily replaced. Bulbs are located under the name plate, behind an aluminum heat shield. The bulb is released by pushing a lever that holds the base of the bulb in position. Uses a standard 6-volt, 10-watt (6v 10w) single-contact bayonet base bulb. Base-type: BA15s (15mm single-contact bayonet). Common industry numbers: 5001, 6V10WF, or GE EAC.
