Overview and Development
The AGM-88 was developed by Texas Instruments (now part of Raytheon) as a more advanced follow-on to the earlier AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard missiles, which had limitations in speed and effectiveness.The development program began in the early 1970s, with the Defense Systems Acquisition Review Council approving full production in March 1983. It was operationally deployed starting in 1984.
Operational Use and Platforms
The AGM-88 HARM can be launched from a variety of aircraft. Key platforms include the F-16, F/A-18, EA-6B Prowler, EA-18G Growler, and the F-35 Lightning II.
The missile is equipped with a passive seeker that homes in on enemy radar emissions. A key feature is its "memory mode," which allows it to continue tracking the last known position of a target even if the enemy radar shuts down to break lock. It can operate in different modes, such as preemptive, missile-as-sensor, and self-protect, to suit various mission needs.
Combat History
The HARM has been combat-proven in numerous conflicts:
1986, Libya: It saw its first combat use during U.S. operations against Libyan air defenses.
1991, Gulf War: The U.S. fired thousands of HARMs to suppress and destroy Iraqi air-defense radar systems, playing a crucial role in establishing air superiority.
Other Conflicts: It has also been used in operations over Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
Later variants, such as the AGM-88E AARGM, have been further upgraded with an advanced guidance section that includes an active millimeter-wave terminal seeker and GPS/INS to improve effectiveness against sophisticated and shutting-down threats
