This exceptional 1859 transcontinental cover represents a prime artifact of Oregon postal history and 19th-century women's higher education. Dispatched from the Pacific Northwest during the pivotal year of Oregon's transition to statehood, the envelope is struck in the upper right with a clear circular datestamp from Corvallis dated March 3, 1859.

The letter carried cross-country correspondence written in elegant period penmanship to Miss Dora Waters at the Troy Female Seminary in Troy, New York. Founded in 1821 by pioneer educator Emma Willard, the Troy Female Seminary was the first institution in the United States dedicated to providing young women with a rigorous classical and scientific collegiate education equal to that offered to men. Daughters of prominent frontier families and merchants across the West were frequently sent across the continent to attend the renowned academy.
