Offered is an intriguing piece of Chicago hotel history: a vintage McCoy Hotel key and its attached original-style room key tag from the historic McCoy Hotel at 949 W. Madison St., Chicago.

The brown/red leather-like key tag is marked:

McCOY HOTEL

949 W. MADISON ST.

CHICAGO

The tag is numbered 138 and retains the original metal attachment ring.

The reverse features the period hotel-key return message:

"IF CARRIED AWAY RETURN UNSEALED — WE GUARANTEE POSTAGE"

The attached key is marked:

CHANTRELL HARDWARE & TOOL CO.

FITCHBURG, MASS.

The key is also marked 1015.

Research confirms that Chantrell 1015 is an identifiable key blank/profile, and a 1958 FBI document independently records a Chantrell Hardware & Tool Co. Fitchburg, Mass. No. 1015 key. The exact age of this particular key cannot be established solely from the manufacturer's marking, so it is being offered based on the complete key-and-hotel-tag assembly rather than making an unsupported claim about an exact manufacturing date.

The McCoy Hotel at 949 Madison Street is documented in period Chicago material as a large hotel for men, and the property was part of the historic West Madison Street hotel district.

Condition: Vintage/antique condition with age-appropriate wear, oxidation/discoloration, surface marks and wear to the key and considerable age/wear to the key tag. Please examine all photographs carefully. The key and tag remain together as found.
