Zaubertränke für Potter-Fans
Magic potions for Potter fans
Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of magic! Get ready to brew Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and the Potion to Boost. To do this, throw the number cards into the matching potion cauldrons one after the other. But be careful, if the bubbling cauldron overflows, you will receive the cards as minus points - unless you have the most cards of that color at the end of the round. But beware, the green poison adds more minus points to the potions. So not only brewing skills are required here, but also tactics! Whoever has the fewest minus points at the end of the game becomes the potion master and wins the game.
"Zaubertränke für Potter Fans" is a tactical card game.
It is a thematic, updated re-release of Knizia's classic card game Poison, newly styled for Harry Potter enthusiasts. Though it is not an officially licensed Warner Bros. product, it uses the "Potter" theme to invite players into a wizarding world of brewing magical elixirs.
Core Gameplay Overview
The Goal: Brew famous concoctions like Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion (Vielsafttrank), and the Potion to Boost (Aufpäppeltrank) while trying to finish the game with the fewest minus points.
The Setup: There are three main potion ingredients/cauldrons represented by three colours: Red, Blue, and Yellow (valued 1 to 7). There are also Green Poison cards (valued at 4 points).
The "13" Rule: Players take turns adding number cards from their hand to the corresponding colour stack. If a player lays down a card that pushes the total value of that cauldron above 13, the cauldron overflows. That player must pick up all the cards in that stack, which count as minus points.
The Tactical Twist: Having cards at the end of the round is bad, unless you hold the absolute majorityof cards in that specific colour. If you hold the most cards of a colour, you can discard them safely without taking minus points. Green poison cards can never be discarded this way and always count against you.
📦 Components
42 Ingredient Cards: 14 Red (Felix Felicis), 14 Blue (Vielsafttrank), and 14 Yellow (Aufpäppeltrank). Each colour contains cards numbered 1 to 7 (two of each).
8 Poison Cards: Green cards, all with a value of 4.
⚙️ Setup
Shuffle all 50 cards together thoroughly.
Deal all cards face-down to the players. (Depending on the player count, some players might have one more card than others; this is normal).
Players keep their cards hidden in their hands.
Leave space in the middle of the table for three separate cauldron stacks (one for each colour).
🧙♂️ How to Play
The player to the left of the dealer starts. Play continues clockwise. On your turn, you must play exactly one card from your hand into the middle of the table.
1. Adding to Cauldrons
Ingredient Cards (Red, Blue, Yellow): Must be placed on the cauldron stack of the matching colour. If that colour stack does not exist yet, start a new one.
- Poison Cards (Green): Can be placed on any of the three cauldron stacks. Green cards act as a wild filler.
2. The Overflow Rule (The Number 13)
When you add a card to a stack, announce the new total combined value of all cards in that stack.
- If the total is 13 or less: Your turn ends.
- If the total exceeds 13: The cauldron overflows!
- You must pick up all the cards currently in that stack (except the card you just played).
- Place these captured cards face-down in front of you. They are your penalty pile.
- The card you just played stays on the table to start the new stack for that cauldron.
🏆 Round End & Scoring
The round ends immediately when all players have played all the cards from their hands. Players then flip over their penalty piles and count their scores based on Majorities:
- Sort by Colour: Separate your penalty cards into Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green.
- Determine Majorities: Count how many individual cards you have of each colour. Compare your count with the other players.
The Immunity Rule: If you own the strictly highest number of cards in a specific colour (Red, Blue, or Yellow), you are immune. You discard those cards, and they score 0 points.
- Note: If there is a tie for the most cards, no one gets immunity. Everyone scores them.
Calculate Points:
- Each remaining Ingredient Card (Red, Blue, Yellow) = 1 minus point.
- Each Poison Card (Green) = 2 minus points. (Green cards can never be discarded via majority; they always count).
Example: You have 5 Blue cards (the most at the table) and 2 Green cards. Your Blue cards are discarded for 0 points. Your Green cards cost you 4 minus points.
🏁 Winning the Game
A standard game lasts for as many rounds as there are players (e.g., a 4-player game lasts 4 rounds), so every player gets to deal once.
Track the scores on a piece of paper across the rounds. The player with the fewest total minus points at the end of the game is crowned the Master Mixologist and wins!
