The man wears a long dark overcoat, flat cap, trousers, and heavy shoes, with one hand tucked into his coat pocket. His wife is also dressed for cold weather in a dark knee-length coat and cloche-style or close-fitting hat. She appears to be holding or adjusting something in her hands while looking downward.
The setting is one of the strongest features of this photograph. The couple stands along the edge of a paved roadway bordered by snow-covered ground, while two period automobiles are visible behind them. The cars appear consistent with approximately the late 1920s to early 1930s, which also fits the couple’s clothing.
The open landscape, winter roadside, automobiles, and heavy coats give this image a very strong period feel and make it especially appealing for collectors of early automotive, winter, and social-history photography.
The reverse contains a handwritten identification. I read it as approximately:
“Frank Hartcraft & wife”
The surname is not perfectly clear, so I would preserve the handwriting in the listing as “Hartcraft” with spelling uncertain rather than present it as unquestionably exact.
The number 153 also appears near the upper edge of the reverse.
