These 2 CDs contain all the tracks contained on the three cassettes released on the Audicord label in 1988 (AC140, AC206 & AC207). They have been re-arranged to keep the tracks of each instrument together.

This is a new CD, but is not produced in shrink-wrapping.

The name Gavioli of Paris immediately springs to mind as the most prominent maker of fairground organs. The company was founded by Giacomo Gavioli in 1806 and continued with his son Lodovico and grandson Anselme who developed and patented the pinned barrel organ system in 1892. This system consisted of a book with a series of zig-zag folded sheets of cardboard which increased the instruments repertoire without the tiresome task of changing barrels. This brought changes to fairgrounds and side shows, as the flamboyant showmen were quick to realise that constant music meant more customers and more money!

Other makers were soon in business to supply the demand, not only in France but also in Belgium, Germany and Holland. By the mid-1930s the fully chromatic jazz organ was perhaps the ultimate development. But by now man’s ingenuity had produced electronic circuits to create a mirror image of organ sounds. Like their counterparts in the cinema, the fairground organ became a redundant casualty of progress. Nevertheless, many examples have survived and their melodies continue to bring pleasure and entertainment over a century after Mr. Gavioli patented his system.
