Description

This a lot of two (2) 1890s oversized cabinet photographs by a railroad worker/photographer named R.C. White.

1) The first photo shows a crew of workers with their handcart on the tracks next to F.C.& P. rolling stock, with two other men looking on from one of the railcars. These railcars belonged to the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad. The reverse side of this  photo is captioned in pencil: "Rail Road scene by R.C. White". The mount is toned around the border, and some water stains are visible mostly on verso side. The photo itself is in quite good condition (but has two small 'bubbles' on the left side surface). The image measures 8" x 5"; the mount measures 10" x 8". It is possible that this particular photo was taken at Lake Butler, in Union County, Florida, given some vernacular information.

2) The second photo shows a large tent, with a nearby woman wearing a stylish hat, with small children. This photo has a very telling hand-caption on verso side: "My tent and family, by R.C. White, Photographer, Hawthorn, Fla." He further identifies his family at the top of the photo with "Mrs. White" and then "Nellie V. and Dewey".  This mount is noticeably water-stained on both sides. The photo itself is in quite good condition. The image measures 8" x 5"; the mount measures 10" x 8".
Hawthorne, Alachua County, Florida.

R.C. White appears to have been a full time railroad worker as well as an amateur photographer. Like many railroad workers of that era, he seems to have travelled to where his work was needed, as evidenced by the second photo showing his tent and family.
