BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  Alnwick Abbey was founded in 1147 by Eustace fitz John as a Premonstratensian monastery on the banks of the River Aln in Northumberland. Housing between 17 and 30 canons at its peak, it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1535, briefly refounded in 1536, and permanently suppressed in 1539. The sole standing structural remnant is an impressive, two-story 14th-century stone gatehouse bearing the De Vescy family coat of arms.
