Late 19th Century Hand-Glazed Ceramic Mask

From the late 19th century emerges this remarkable hand-glazed ceramic representation of Mahākāla—the Great Protector, revered across Buddhist and Hindu traditions as the fierce yet compassionate guardian who dissolves obstacles and defends the sacred.

Unlike the more commonly encountered wooden effigies, this example was shaped entirely by hand from dense, high-fired stoneware or earthenware clay. Once sculpted, it was finished with a lustrous glaze of ochre, cobalt, and deep ivory tones—each layer carefully applied to bring forth a sense of life within the form. The result is a mask that radiates both spiritual intensity and artistic mastery.

The facial features are alive with expression—eyes wide and unblinking in eternal vigilance, fangs bared in divine ferocity. His brows, sculpted into flame-like arcs, seem to flicker with an energy that transcends the stillness of clay.
