Weighing an impressive 5.2 kilos, this tin box was made with added thickness to the base, sides, and an interior safe box for added security. There are no keys, but it still works well as an attractive storage box.
The top layer of the box is fitted out very much as a writing box would have been, with space for pens and ink, as well a recess in the lid for documents; that layer then lifts out to reveal extra storage and the safe box.
The box was so secure that at some point it had to have the lock, (made by 'Hobbs London')', filed down to open it, but that does not affect its visual appeal.
There are the remnants of 2 initials and the owner's surname 'Grayfoot' on the lid. The box has a very good patina and there are attractive solid brass recessed handles on the sides.
The measurements are: 14 inches by 9.25 inches by 6.25 inches.
