RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1982) unbranded VINTAGE 35mm color slide | the idol
  • This is an original 35 mm colour slide from my considerable archive, which I have built over many years.

    • Indiana: Give me the whip.

    • Satipo: Throw me the idol.

    • [they both see a stone door closing]

    • Satipo: No time to argue! Throw me the idol, I'll throw you the whip!

    • Indiana: [throws the idol] Give me the whip!

    • Satipo: [drops the whip] Adiós, señor.

THE PRODUCTION BUDGET WAS $20 MILLION WITH A GLOBAL RETURN OF $390 MILLION

    • In 1936, globetrotting archaeologist Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to locate the biblical Ark of the Covenant before Nazi forces can secure it for world domination. Joined by his feisty ex-flame Marion Ravenwood, Indy races across Nepal and Egypt to outsmart rivals, ultimately securing the holy relic and surviving its devastating supernatural power.

  • NOTE: In Sydney, Raiders of the Lost Ark ran at the same cinema in George Street, near Chinatown, for ONE YEAR. Most movies would have a City run for a couple of weeks, then go out to the suburbs for three or four weeks. The movie Raiders was an exciting and rare phenomenon. Many cinema goers went back several times for repeat viewings.

FIVE SLIDES CAN BE SHIPPED IN ONE PACKAGE AT NO EXTRA COST

The small number of studio-branded slides were often retained for distributor archives, supplied to key exhibitors, or allocated to preferred cinema clients. As a result, the majority of slides distributed for many major releases were unbranded duplicates produced by or for the Australian distributor.

These unbranded slides formed the backbone of cinema promotion throughout Australia and are an authentic part of the film's original theatrical advertising campaign. Today, everything is digital: posters are displayed on monitors, and cinema exhibitors are supplied with digital images to play if they choose; most don't. The day of the slide as a promotional tool is long gone, let's say, a blast from the past, never to return.
