A miniature, framed 1920s Viennese cityscape painted by the Austrian artist Emmerich Kirsch (frequently spelled Emmrich or Emmerich Kirall/Kirsch in historical auction records). It will need reframing as it was removed to identify/inspect the painting and identify the location and read the artists name. It will be sold with the frame and glass it was originally framed in. The piece depicts the Judenplatz, a historic and culturally significant square in the heart of Vienna's Old Town. Watercolours of this size were highly popular souvenirs and collector's items in interwar Austria, capturing the nostalgic, architectural charm of Vienna's historic quarters before the second World War. Historical & Visual Context :- The Subject :- Judenplatz (Jewish Square) was the centre of Jewish life in Vienna during the Middle Ages. In 1924, when this was painted, the square was characterized by its stunning Baroque architecture and deep historic roots. Today, the square famously houses Rachel Whiteread's Holocaust Memorial and the Misrachi Haus (Museum Judenplatz). The Scale :- At 13cm x 11cm, this is a miniature or cabinet-sized watercolour. Artists of the period used fine, precise brushwork to capture intricate architectural details on these tiny sheets of paper. The Era :- Circa 1924 places this piece directly in the interwar period. Viennese art from this era is highly regarded for its blend of traditional architectural precision and soft, atmospheric light treatments. Viennese architectural watercolours from the early 20th century occupy a very specific niche in the art market. This painting is very detailed considering it’s size.
