Caleb Cushing. (1800-1879). American Democratic politician and diplomat who served as a congressman from Massachusetts and the 23rd United States Attorney General under President Franklin Pierce. Cushing was an eager proponent of territorial and commercial expansion, especially regarding the acquisition of Texas, Oregon, and Cuba. As the first American commissioner to China, Cushing negotiated (1844) the opening of China's ports to U.S. trade.

 

Autograph letter signed, 8x10, written on both sides with blank adjoining leaf, Newburyport, October 7, 1848, to S. C. Beamis, regarding his schedule. In full, “Your letter of the 3rd is received. I wrote Mr. Smith of the Post on the same subject yesterday from which I have received a letter from the Plato Committee making arrangements for me as follows: Randolph, Friday Oct. 17, Worcester, Wednesday, Oct. 18, Springfield, Thursday, Oct. 19, Greenfield, Friday, Oct. 20. It seems to me difficult, if possible, to be at the Northampton Committee on the 16th and the Randolph Meeting on the 17th, and yet I should like to be with you at Northampton. I will confer with the Plato Committee on Monday, and write you again the same day. I am, very truly yours, C. Cushing. Mailing folds, one tear along fold not affecting writing. In good condition.
