Selling new Made in Czech Republic VDO 3 pole diesel tachometer generator assembly, pre-assembled with drive key for Detroit and Caterpillar diesel engines.  Brand new 7/8”-18 generator with retail box, never used or installed, not a return item, not a surplus generator with a metric thread fitting. For all 12 Volt, 24 Volt and 32 Volt boats, land vehicles and stationary engine applications. VDO part number 340.807/1/1 (old part #) and 340 008 (new part #). Pre-assembled unit with the extension shaft adapter that's required for use on a Glendinning engine synchronizer. Inner flex shaft and VDO drive key are inside the adapter.  The generator can be installed with or without the extension shaft adapter and inner flex shaft, unless it's being installed on a Glendinning engine synchronizer, in which case it is very important that the extension shaft adapter and inner flex shaft pieces be used.  Installing the generator onto a Glendinning engine synchronizer without the extension shaft adapter will break the generator and the drive key, causing the tang of the drive key to be broken off and permanently stuck inside the Glendinning engine synchronizer, requiring the Glendinning synchronizer to be removed from the boat to be sent back to the factory for repair, which is why the extension shaft adapter and inner flex shaft pieces are parts that are made by Glendinning and are supplied by Glendinning on every new synchronizer that they sell.  If someone removed the original adapters and inner flex shafts from your Glendinning engine synchronizer, you need to replace those parts before you install a generator, which is why these pieces are supplied by me with the pre-assembled generator unit that’s being sold here with the generator that is for sale. Additionally, if your engine has several thousand hours of use, the output shaft of the tachometer drive will wobble, and the tachometer drive will leak engine oil out through the output shaft bushing of the drive, which will destroy the generator. The extension shaft adapter and inner flex shaft, when angled upwards, will protect the generator against this problem on systems where the generator needs to be mounted directly onto the tach drive of the engine. If you don’t want the extension shaft adapter and inner flex shaft, you can throw them away, but if your existing generator doesn’t have these parts already, then that’s probably why your existing generator is broken and in need of replacement.

Check that your existing wires are hooked up correctly and that your existing unit is grounded before ordering.  More than once when someone has bought a generator from me, it turned out later that the reason the tach wasn't working is because the person who installed the original generator believed that it wasn’t necessary to hook up a ground wire, or hooked the ground wire up to the wrong terminal. Terminal C hooks up to ground.  Terminal G S hooks up to terminal S on the tachometer, not to ground. G doesn't stand for ground.  G stands for the German word Geber, which translates into English as Sender.

7/8"-18 thread pattern threaded connections, .187" diameter tanged tip on the end of the inner flex shaft that hooks up to the engine or the engine synchronizer.  4 pulse unit, 10V AC at 1,000 RPM, 20V AC at 2,000 RPM, 30V AC at 3,000 RPM primary signal.  Return policy: Return only accepted if you receive a defective part from me, or if the item is not as described. No return if the reason for the return is you ordered the wrong part by mistake.

FAQ:

Q:  "I also want to purchase X from you.  Is there a way I can purchase both items without having to pay for shipping twice?"

A:  "Yes.  If you purchase this item, then after you've paid for it, I will then within a reasonable amount of time change the shipping price on X to one dollar."

(Note: Because I require payment at the time of purchase, I will only give this discount if you wait for me to change the shipping price on X.  I won't give the discount if you ask me after you pay for X, or if you are reading this after you bought two different items that don’t include this one).

Q:  "Can this be used on a Cummins diesel?"

A:  "Yes."
