Here’s a Vintage Pair of 1960’s Letters Signed by Prominent New York State Jurist, Politician and Hard-Fighting World War II Officer

ADMINSTRATIVE LAW JUDGE OF THE FAMILY COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK, 1963-1984,

APPOINTED ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY 1950-1956,

ELECTED JUDGE OF THE DISTRICT COURT OF NASSAU COUNTY 1956-1963, and

WWII CAPTAIN, US ARMY, COMMANDING BATTERY C, 328^th FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION OF THE 85^th US INFANTRY – THE CUSTER DIVISION - AS PART OF THE NORTH AFRICA and ITALIAN CAMPAIGN, LEADING HIS BATTERY AT ANZIO, ITALY IN 1944, AND PARTICIPATING IN THE LIBERATION OF ROME.

THE TWO LETTERS ARE ADDRESSED TO HIS FRIEND and FELLOW COLLEGUE IN A NEIGHBORING STATE, THE HON. ABRAHAM L[OUIS]. ROSENBERG, JUDGE OF THE JUVENILE & DOMESTIC RELATIONS COURT IN HACKENSACK, BERGEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, CONCERNING PERSONAL and BUSINESS MATTERS. ONE LETTER IS AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED DATED JAN. 14, 1968, PICTURING AN ARMY AIR CORPS PLANE DROPPING BOMBS AND LANDING WITH A “HI”!

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: THE HONORABLE WILLIAM J. DEMPSEY

William J. "Bill" Dempsey was born in New York City on September 2, 1914. At a young age, his family moved to the Bronx, and in 1929, to Mineola, Long Island. He graduated from Fordham College in 1935, and from Fordham Law School in 1938. In 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Capt. Bill Dempsey was with Battery C, 328th Field Artillery Battalion of the 85th Infantry Division (Custer Division) and was part of the North Africa/Italian Campaign. His unit fought at Anzio, Italy in 1944. On June 4, 1944, he and the 85th Division participated in the liberation of Rome. He and his unit also fought to free the Italian peninsula.

Bill was discharged in 1946 as a major in the reserves. In 1950, he was appointed to a position as an assistant district attorney. In 1956, he was elected to the District Court of Nassau County, and, in 1963, he was elected to the Family Court, making notable rulings on summary proceedings and juvenile and family law.

He had a distinguished career on the bench starting in the 1960s, successfully running for re-election with bipartisan support. He died on October 1, 2002 at the age of 88.

The documents are in excellent condition.
