Ranunculus Bitternatus (Ranunculaceae)

One of a set of 738 prints produced from original drawings by Sydney Parkinson on the first voyage of Captain Cook (1768-1771). Parkinson made sketches of specimens collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on the voyage, which were to be turned into watercolours. Following Parkinson's death on the return voyage, the watercolour was completed by John Cleveley in 1775 the plates were engraved by Jabez Goldar, under the patronage of Banks, but never published. The plates passed to the Natural History Museum on Banks' death and were eventually published by them in the 1980s (in association with Alecto Publishing) in full colour, using the original engraving plates.
The engravings were printed in colour à la poupée, up to fifteen colours being worked into the single plate before each print was pulled, with additional details added in watercolour.
The sheet is identified by embossed blind stamps, including the publishers’ and printer’s stamps, the copyright symbol and date of publication. The initials of the individual printer, the plate number and the edition number are recorded in pencil.
A very fine print which has unfaded colouring and detail in black ink, the image printed within a strong platemark and impression measuring 30 cm x 46 cm (12 x 18 ins) on a wove paper sheet measuring approximately; 57 cm x 72 cm (22½ x 28 ins) and will be shipped in a tube.
Unframed and unmounted, presented with its original picture window mount (not folio sleeve), blank on the reverse, the condition of the sheet and image is good, with toning to the mount window, handling marks and an overall toning condusive with age.
