Japanese Kokeshi Doll — Abo Masafumi (阿保正文), Tsugaru Style, Apple / Acorn Form

A charming and characterful kokeshi doll by Abo Masafumi (阿保正文), a craftsman working in the Tsugaru (津軽) regional tradition of Aomori Prefecture. The doll is signed on the base in hand-brushed ink — a mark of authentic artisan authorship.

The form is the distinctive apple or pear shape (ringo-gata) associated with the Tsugaru school: a round, domed head set over a compact, rounded body that gives the whole piece an endearing, top-heavy silhouette. Standing approximately 7 cm tall, it is small but full of presence.

The face is painted with bold, expressive brushwork: strong arched brows, almond-shaped eyes with a mischievous, knowing glance, and a small open mouth with a flash of red — a lively, almost theatrical expression that stands apart from the serene faces of other regional styles. The hair is rendered in deep black, swept into a neat bob with a clean parting.

The body carries a beautifully painted tsubaki (camellia) motif — a bold red bloom with teal-green leaves — framed by delicate purple and grey ring-turning lines at neck and base. The camellia is a classic motif in Tsugaru kokeshi, associated with the snowy winters of northern Japan and the first signs of spring.

The piece was purchased at a craft market approximately two years ago and has since been displayed indoors. Condition is excellent overall with normal, minor signs of display use.
