Full Description

Three Dark Days Artisan Disciplina (rope whip) — an instrument designed for traditional spiritual and devotional practice.

CordsOfPenance Disciplinas are handmade from natural knotted and twisted sisal rope, never braided. Each piece is individually crafted, so every Disciplina is unique. Our design has been tested with over 10,000 strokes and remains strong, reliable, and durable.

The Three Dark Days Disciplina features a rope grip available in three liturgical colors as well as natural, and a seven‑fall construction with three knots in each fall. These elements carry deep devotional symbolism:

Liturgical Colors — Purple is the traditional color of penance and preparation; red stands for fire and the Holy Spirit; teal, used for much of the church year, represents fidelity, hope, anticipation, and life; natural reflects simplicity and humility.

Construction & Materials

Sisal Disciplinas are impact whips traditionally used for symbolic or devotional practice. They do not easily break the skin. Intensity depends on technique, knot tightness, and consistency of use. Over time, the rope becomes more flexible without losing effectiveness.

The Disciplina Defined

A Disciplina is an ancient instrument of Christian self‑discipline and penance, historically used to aid sanctification and spiritual focus, particularly in contemplating the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many Christian traditions — including Anglican, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic — have used the Disciplina in devotional life.

“And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple…” — John 2:15–17 (KJV)
