For sale is an E-Machines Futura MX NuBus video card for 680x0-based NuBus Macintosh systems.

This card has been fully tested in a Macintosh IIci and is working properly. In testing, it produced a stable image and allowed resolution selection using the card’s rotary switch when used with the correct sense-code adapter setup.

The Futura MX is a 12-inch NuBus graphics card with 3MB of onboard VRAM and QuickDraw acceleration. It allows for the following resolution/color combinations:

Important adapter note: this card is sensitive to Macintosh monitor sense codes. In my testing, a standard adapter configuration did not allow proper resolution switching from the card’s rotary dial. Using a 10-switch Mac-to-VGA adapter set to 678 worked correctly, after which the card’s rotary switch could be used to select resolutions. This matches user reports that the Futura cards require a specific sense-code arrangement for the onboard rotary switch to function properly; one 68kMLA report specifically notes that setting 678 allowed 1024 × 768 in millions of colors on a Macintosh IIci.

Documentation and user reports indicate that these cards may also respond to Apple monitor sense codes, but without the correct adapter/cable setup the rotary switch may appear to do nothing or the card may not offer the expected resolutions. The original E-Machines information also states that the proper E-Machines cable was required for the display-card switch to be functional. 

Please note that the adapter is not included unless explicitly shown in the photos/listing. Buyers should be prepared to use a suitable Mac-to-VGA adapter or custom sense-code setup, especially if they want to use the card at 1024 × 768 or change resolutions from the rotary dial.

Condition is used. The PCB is clean overall, with normal signs of age and handling. Please review all photos carefully for the exact board revision, connector, components, and cosmetic condition.

As with all vintage Macintosh video hardware, compatibility depends on the host Macintosh, system software, monitor, adapter, sense-code configuration, and display sync support. Proper setup is the buyer’s responsibility. Best suited for collectors, restorers, or users familiar with vintage Macintosh NuBus graphics cards.
