Fun Facts: During the era this photo was taken, Bass Lake was a prime location for "puddle jumper" motorboats. Because the lake is so large and open, a stiff wind could create surprisingly choppy water despite the shallow depth. The sandy bottom of the lake is actually a thin layer over a deep bed of marl—a crumbly mixture of clay and calcium carbonate that gave the lake a unique ecosystem before modern development
