The AbramsX is a next-generation main battle tank technology demonstrator developed by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS). First unveiled at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Symposium in October 2022, it represents a revolutionary leap forward in tank design, incorporating lessons learned from modern conflicts such as the Russo-Ukrainian War .
Rather than a production-ready tank, the AbramsX is a technology demonstrator designed to showcase advanced capabilities that could be integrated into future variants of the M1 Abrams family or influence the U.S. Army's next-generation combat vehicle programs .

Key Features and Innovations

1. Hybrid-Electric Propulsion
The AbramsX features a hybrid diesel-electric power pack based on the Cummins Advanced Combat Engine (ACE) and SAPA Advanced Combat Transmission (ACT). This system delivers several significant advantages :
50% reduction in fuel consumption compared to current M1 Abrams tanks
Silent watch capability – the ability to operate sensors and electronics without engine noise or thermal signature
Silent mobility – limited low-speed movement on battery power alone
Reduced logistics burden – less need for fuel resupply convoys
2. Unmanned Turret & Reduced Crew
The AbramsX employs a remotely controlled unmanned turret, allowing the crew to be reduced from four to three personnel. All three crew members (commander, gunner, driver) sit side-by-side in an armored capsule at the front of the hull. This configuration: 
Improves crew survivability by separating them from ammunition storage
Enables a lighter, lower-profile turret design
Enhances crew communication and information sharing
3. Advanced Armament
Primary Weapon:
120mm XM360 smoothbore gun – lighter than the current M256, featuring a longer recoil stroke and a pepper-pot muzzle brake. It is equipped with a tail-mounted autoloader carrying 19 rounds 
Secondary Weapons:
30mm XM914 automatic cannon on a Kongsberg RS6 remote weapon station – effective against light armor, drones, and infantry
Javelin anti-tank missile integration capability
Four Switchblade 300 loitering munitions (drones), providing beyond-line-of-sight attack capability 
4. Survivability & Protection
Unmanned turret – removes crew from primary target area
Trophy Active Protection System (APS) – intercepts incoming rockets, missiles, and drones using millimeter-wave radar and kinetic interceptors 
Modular armor packages – can be fitted based on specific threat requirements
360-degree situational awareness system with cameras around the vehicle, allowing crew to "see through" the hull using augmented reality helmets 
5. Digital Architecture & AI Integration
The AbramsX incorporates the KATALYST Next Generation Electronic Architecture (NGEA) , an AI-enabled system that:
Connects all onboard systems
Enables manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) with unmanned ground vehicles and drones
Allows for rapid upgrades and adaptation to new technologies
Serves as a "key node in lethal battlefield networks" 

Current Status
As of 2025, the AbramsX remains a technology demonstrator funded internally by General Dynamics rather than an official U.S. Army program.
