AIM-54 Phoenix Missile

The AIM-54 Phoenix is a long-range, air-to-air missile developed for the U.S. Navy, exclusively carried by the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. It was the first operational air-to-air missile with active radar homing and the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Notable Capabilities

Multiple Targeting – The F-14's AN/AWG-9 radar could track up to 24 targets and guide six Phoenix missiles against six different threats simultaneously.

"Fire and Forget" – After reaching a certain phase, the missile's active radar seeker autonomously locks onto the target, allowing the F-14 to maneuver or engage other targets.

Retirement

The AIM-54 was withdrawn from U.S. service in 2004, replaced by the smaller, more versatile AIM-120 AMRAAM (which the F-14 could also carry). Today, the missile remains in service only with Iran's air force (acquired before the 1979 Iranian Revolution), though its operational status is uncertain.

Interesting Fact

The Phoenix is one of the heaviest air-to-air missiles ever deployed – weighing nearly half a ton – and was too large for most fighter aircraft. Its enormous size and the complexity of its fire-control system made the F-14 the only suitable platform.
