JACQUELINE ALICE (MCKINNEY) BATTSON

(1932 – 2016)

Jackie Battson was born in Seattle in 1932, raised in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood near Woodland Park, and graduated from Ballard High School and the University of Washington. After working for many years for the Washington Natural Gas Company, Jackie became a regional supervisor for the Census Bureau, a staff member for the City of Bellingham and a staff member for the Washington State Democratic Party. She volunteered for over 35 years in the world of politics and causes. She inspired many activists as well as helping to elect officials from precinct caucuses to district meetings, sending candidates to City Hall, the Courthouse, Olympia, and, finally, to the United States Congress.

THE 1984 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

The 1984 Democratic National Convention was held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California from July 16 to July 19, 1984, to select candidates for the 1984 United States presidential election. Former Vice President Walter Mondale was nominated for president and Representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York was nominated for vice president. Ferraro became the first woman to be nominated by either major party for the presidency or vice presidency. In another first, the 1984 Democratic Convention was chaired by the governor of Kentucky, Martha Layne Collins. The Democratic National Committee Chairman at the time, Charles T. Manatt, led the convention.
