These shoes were invented by Grandmaster Fred Villari in 1982 under the name conflux. In 1988, he went to Converse to have them made for his 300 schools. It was one of his big business plans to sell a martial arts shoe to the world. The ones that he sold in his schools had his name on them.

They happen to be the best martial arts shoe ever made, according to some traditional karate experts! You cannot learn proper technique with shoes lacking design.  This shoe was meant to be a street self-defense shoe (the backs of the heels and sides are rigid).
