Here we have the legendary Olympia SM7. Made in 1963 in Western Germany, it features the high-quality engineering you'd expect!
It’s a beautiful, recently refurbished model with a great feel. It comes with a new platen, the original hardshell case, the original paperwork, and a service certificate from the unit's last cleaning.
I am switching to a heavier desktop model, so I no longer need this medium-sized portable, on which I wrote two 900- to 1200-word columns per week. It’s a sturdy, reliable machine and a real workhorse. I enjoyed writing on it, but even the miles I put on it aren’t enough to meet the demands of my work.
This Olympia was serviced right before I bought it in the fall of 2025. The service included a deep cleaning. All the parts are in great physical condition, including the keys, bars, rubber bits, and even the feet. The cosmetics are top-notch.
Check the photos and see for yourself!
IMPORTANT: After recent use, the escapement mechanism on this SM7 seems to have failed, which means the carriage isn't operating as it should, and neither the spacebar nor the typing keys advances the carriage.
At least, my theory is that the problem lies in the escapement mechanism. I haven’t bothered to troubleshoot the issue myself since I’m getting a new model anyway. It may be an easy task for a professional tech.
