This is a first printing of Dark Sanctuary by H.B. Gregory, published by Rider & Co. in the UK in 1940.

It is among the rarest of horror novels. Less than a dozen copies are known to have been released to the public before the remainder of the print run was destroyed by a strike from a German bomber during World War II.  The book was considered lost for decades before being reprinted from one of the handful of known copies for a limited edition run from Midnight House in 2001.

Interest in the title spiked when it was named one of the best British supernatural thrillers by Karl Edward Wagner in an article of Twilight Zone magazine. Wagner, a broadly lauded author and also the editor of the popular Year's Best Horror book series for DAW Books, was among the most prominent authorities on horror fiction of the twentieth century.

This copy has a facsimile jacket, the original jacket long since lost.
