1906 Knights Of Pythias Indianapolis Indiana Lodge 56 Cornerstone Laying Medal. The front of this brass medal has "K of P 56," which stands for Knights of Pythias Lodge 56. The back of the medal reads: "Corner Stone Laying. Indianapolis. May 27 1906. G.W. Dix." Records from the late 1800s and early 1900s historical data indicate Indianapolis Lodge #56 was active in Indianapolis, Indiana. This medal commemorates the construction of the Knights of Pythias Building in Indianapolis, which was built between 1906 and 1907 at Massachusetts Avenue and Pennsylvania Street. It was an 11-story, Neoclassical Revival structure featuring a "castle-like" facade with towers and battlements. The building was a prominent, stone-and-terra cotta landmark known as the nation's second-largest flatiron building. It served as a fraternal headquarters, office building, and auditorium before being razed in 1967. The medal measures 1-3/4" long by 1-3/8" wide.
